Why apple? Why not "an orange a day keeps the doctor away" or "a mango a day keeps the doctor away" ?
It's just because not only that apples rich of vitamin C, but also in apple we can find a lot of phytochemicals, such as quercetin, catechin, phloridzin, and chlorogenic acid. So what's phytochemicals do? Phytochemicals help our body against chronic diseases and slow aging. Then what kind of chronic diseases do apple fight ?
Many studies believe that the apple intake has a correlation with reducing risk of lung cancer in both men and women in almost all ethnic groups. Apples consist of high flavonoids, especially quercetin and quercetin conjugates and that makes apples are the main source of flavonoids. The flavonoids from apples is most likely responsible for reducing the risk in lung cancer.
Apples intake is associated with reductions in the risk of both cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular events. From reseaches, we know that comsumption of apples decrease a cerebrovascular disease, so that who has the highest consumption of apples has a lower risk of thrombotic stroke compared to those who don't. The intakes of catechin and epicatechin, both constituents of apples, were strongly inversely associated with coronary heart disease death. Flavonoids intake is strongly correlated with a decreased mortality from heart disease in eldery men.
Apples intake is associated with a reduced incidence of asthma. Flavonoids intake in general is associated with a lower risk of asthma, and the association is attributed mainly to quercetin, hesperitin, and naringenin. In other study, it was found that cathehin might beneficially affect lung function and negatively associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Consumption an apple not only help decreasing the risk of heart diseases, cancer, asthma, but apple consumption may also be associated with a lower risk of type II diabetes and weght loss in middle aged overweight women.
Apples have been shown to have potent antiproliferative activity in several studies. Unique combination of phytochemicals in the apples are responsible for inhibiting the growth of tumor cells. Aplles have the third highest aantiproliferative activity when compared to other fruits.
Phenols in apples help our body to regulate lipids by lowering the bad cholesterol and boosting the good cholesterol. Some of protective effect against cardiovascular disease may come from its potential cholesterol-lowering ability.
Juice of aplles can kill up to 80 % of bacteria in aral cavity.
Phytonutrients help preventing nerodegenative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinsonism.
After knowing the benefits we can get just for consuming an apple, so what are you waiting for? mmmm.....It's taste good !!!
