Vitamin A

Vitamin A is vitamin in vegetables and dairy products, a fat-soluble vitamin found in some vegetables, fish, milk, and eggs, and important for vision. It is also known as retinol and carotenoids. There are many reasons why vitamin A is so important to the immune system. Vitamin A helps to maintain the function of the cells that line the airways, digestive tract, and urinary tract, this is important because these paths are lined with mucosal cells that act as a barrier to germs. Without sufficient vitamin A, these cells would not function properly. Vitamin A is also important to maintaining a healthy immune system, as it is integral to white blood cell production. Both vitamin A excess and deficiency are known to cause birth defects. Retinol and retinoic acid are essential for embryonic development. During fetal development, retinoic acid functions in limb development and formation of the heart, eyes, and ears

Deficiency in Vitamin A
A deficiency of vitamin A can have damaging effects on your vision as well as your susceptibility to infectious diseases. Vitamin A is readily available and, in industrial nations, deficiencies in it are very rare, except in poor country we still can find it. A severe vitamin A deficiency can result in corneal ulcers, scarring, and blindness. In its mildest forms, vitamin A deficiencies can lead to poor night vision. Resistance to infectious diseases is also linked to insufficient intake of vitamin A. Children who are even mildly deficient in vitamin A are more susceptible to respiratory disease and diarrhea.

Hypervitaminosis A
Hypervitaminosis A is the condition caused by vitamin A toxicity. It is caused by overconsumption of preformed vitamin A, not carotenoids. Acute vitamin A toxicity is relatively rare, and symptoms include nausea, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, dry skin, and cerebral edema. Signs of chronic toxicity include dry itchy skin, desquamation, loss of appetite, headache, cerebral edema, and bone and joint pain. Also, symptoms of vitamin A toxicity in infants include bulging fontanels.Severe cases of hypervitaminosis A may result in liver damage, hemorrhage, and coma. Generally, signs of toxicity are associated with long-term consumption of vitamin A in excess of ten times the RDA (8,000 to 10,000 mcg/day or 25,000 to 33,000 IU/day).

Another Silent Killer

Have You ever had these symptoms :

  • More than 3 times gets up in the middle of night to take a pee?
  • Eat a lot but you loss your body weight?
  • Drink a lot ?
  • Feel tingling, burning sensation or thick feeling of your foot?
  • There is ulcer for a long time difficult to be cured ?
Well, if You have those lately, You might have Type II Diabetes Mellitus symptoms.
Type II diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder affecting blood sugar levels, a disorder in which there is no control of blood sugar, through decreased sensitivity to insulin, which causing kidney, eye, and nerve damage.

To be sure, you can check your blood test which may result any one of the following :
  • Fasting plasma glucose level at or above 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/l).
  • Plasma glucose at or above 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/l) two hours after a 75 g oral glucose load as in a glucose tolerance test.
  • Symptoms of hyperglycemia and casual plasma glucose at or above 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/l).
But if your result of fasting glucose levels beetween 100 to 125 mg/dL (6.1 and 7.0 mmol/l), you are considered to have impaired fasting glucose. And if your result of plasma glucose at or above 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/l, but not over 200, two hours after a 75 g oral glucose load, you are considered to have impaired glucose tolerance. Of these two pre-diabetic states, the latter in particular is a major risk factor for progression to full-blown diabetes mellitus as well as cardiovascular disease.

And for you who have the risk factors such as obesity, family history of diabetes, high-risk ethnicity (Hispanic, Native American, Afro-Caribbean, Pacific Islander), I suggest you to visit your doctor regularly if you have those symptoms above.

If I Don't See My Doctor, Don't Eat My Meds, So What Will Happen ? Of course there will be any rewards for you, any complications from your illness, such as..
  • Vascular disease, chronic elevation of blood glucose level leads to damage of blood vessels. The lining of blood vessels take in more glucose than normal, since they don't depend on insulin. They form more surface glycoproteins than normal, and cause the basement membrane to grow thicker and weaker. The resulting problems are grouped as microvascular disease and macrovascular disease.
    • Microangiopathy, which can cause one or more of the following:
      • Diabetic retinopathy, growth of stiff and fragile new blood vessels in the retina as well as swelling of the macula, which can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.
      • Diabetic neuropathy, abnormal and decreased sensation, usually in a hand and foot, starting with the feet but potentially in other nerves, later often fingers and hands. When combined with damaged blood vessels this can lead to diabetic foot. Other forms of diabetic neuropathy may present as amyotrophy, is a muscle weakness due to neuropathy.
      • Diabetic nephropathy, kidney damage which can lead to chronic renal failure, eventually requiring dialysis. Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of adult kidney failure in the world.
      • Diabetic cardiomyopathy, heart damage, leading to heart failure.

    • Macroangiopathy which accelerated atherosclerosis is a contributor:
      • Coronary artery disease, heart attack.
      • Stroke
      • Peripheral vascular disease, which contributes to intermittent claudication (fell pain in foot or leg, worse by activity).
      • Diabetic myonecrosis, your mucle become thin

  • Diabetic foot, usually caused by a combination both of sensory neuropathy (numbness or insensitivity) and vascular damage, increase rates of skin ulcers and infection and, in serious cases, necrosis and gangrene. It is the most common cause of non-traumatic adult amputation, usually of toes and or feet.
  • Diabetic encephalopathy is the increased cognitive decline and risk of dementia observed in diabetes.
How is the prevention? The prevention is so simple, just keep an eye at your weight and exercise regularly. Don't forget to see your doctor... have a healthy day !!

Hypertension is a sillent killer among us, did you know? We can have it but we don't know we have it, it can come without sign or symptoms. Like a thief come to our house without permission.

We know that hypertension is defined as high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80, blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called "pre-hypertension", and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high.

Example, from the examination, the doctor said, my blood pressure is 120/80, that means 120 is the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. And 80 is the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.

Causes
Causes of hypertension up to 90 % is unknown. But the rest, called secunder hypertension, is caused by underlying diseases, such as diabetes, Adrenal glands tumor, kidney problems, and it can also caused by medicines or pregnancy.

Risk factor
smoking, alcohol, high salt and calories diet, less in exercise, obesity, and in a pressured conditions.

Sign and Symptoms
Generally you won't find any sign or symptom, unless there have been any complications.

Complication
Stroke (Cranio Vascular Attacks)
Heart Failure
Kidney Diseases

Prevention
Routine check up after 30 years old annualy
Stop smoking or free alcohol
Reduce weight excess
Do exercise
Manage stress conditions

Treatment
Nonmedicine : diet low salt and callories, quit smoking, daily exercise.
Medicine : There're a lot of class of antihypertension, they have different ways to reach target, so for best result and do no harm, please do visit your physician.

With medicines and control regularly, avoiding the risk factors, so that we can chart a lower mortality rates because of hypertension.

Daily intake must be consist of complex carbohydrate, like bread and crackers which helping us sleep. Don't just take the simple carbohydrate such as sugar.
Why must complex carbohydrate? Because its nutrients trigger our body to release serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter which makes us asleep. Beside those, drinking a glass of hot milk or honey can be a good solution for sleeping problems. You can also try to eat lettuce in the afternoon, because it has opium like substance which makes you fall asleep.
